UNEARTHING THE ROT

The firing of members of the Commission on Urban Poor because of lavish junkets, the anomalies of the Philippine Sports Commission, the 6-million peso extravagant Christmas Party of the PCSO, are just a tip of the iceberg. I expect more anomalies to surface which show the deep rot in government. The Aquino government waded in the rot. When people enter government, their heads tend to swell. They look on taxpayers money as their piggy bank.

President Duterte has continuously warned against corruption. He has not hesitated to take swift action against those who do not heed his warnings. His latest announcement on the travel ban abroad of officials of the executive branch without first securing his personal authorization is a move in the right direction. There are simply too many scams.

Many in government do not heed his warnings because they feel secure in their job. Nobody is indispensable except the president. He has demonstrated his willingness to fire erring officials, whether friend or foe.

Make no mistake about it. Duterte means what he says. I have been involved in Intel, in government, in media. I know how that murky world operates. That is why I had been an advocate of rev powers for the president to clean up the rot in one sweep. The people have already given them last Nov. 30. If the nonsense doesn't stop, all he has to do is assume them. So people better listen to what he is saying. When his patience runs out, the corrupt better scramble.

Some claiming to support the president are against rev powers. To continue talking about them is moot and academic. The people already decided on Nov. 30, so further talk is useless. My question to those who continue to oppose rev powers is this: do you want the rot to continue? If you do, it means you have rotten motives yourself. - By Jose Alejandrino
