Inihayag ni Presidential Spokesman Harry Roque ngayong Huwebes, Disyembre 7, na ang Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea, sa pamamagitan ng awtoridad ng Pangulo, ay pumirma ng extension ng serbisyo ni Guerrero nitong Miyerkules, Disyembre 6.
"AFP Chief of Staff General Guerrero will reach his age of compulsory retirement on December 17, 2017, and the President has extended his service to April 24, 2018, as per Republic Act No. 8186, or 6 months since he assumed office as AFP Chief of Staff," pahayag ni Roque.
Si Guerrero, na pumalit kay Eduardo Año bilang pinuno ng AFP noong Oktubre 26, ay nakatakda na magretiro ngayong Disyembre o maglingkod lamang sa posisyon ng halos dalawang buwan. Ang kanyang appointment ay inaprobahan lamang ng Commission on Appointments nitong Miyerkules.
Sa isang pahayag, sinabi ng militar na si Guerrero ay, "profoundly grateful to the President for the latter's continued trust and confidence".
"This extension of the AFP Chief's military service will allow him more time to implement important plans and programs of the AFP especially in this challenging time that the nation faces threats from foreign and local terrorists and the CPP-NPA-NDF," sinabi ng militar.
Ang extension ng serbisyo ng Guerrero ay ang pagsisimula ng gobyerno ng rehabilitasyon sa Marawi City at tatalakayin ang mga banta ng seguridad sa mga aktibong grupo ng mga terorista sa Mindanao.
Malinaw na ipinahayag ni Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana ang suporta para sa pagpapalawig ng termino ni Guerrero.
Ang iba pang mga pangulo ay nagpalawak din ng mga tuntunin ng kanilang mga pinuno ng militar, na dapat na magretiro kapag umabot sila sa edad na 56. Sa panahon ng administrasyong Arroyo, pinalawig ni Pangulong Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo ang termino ni General Hermogenes Esperon Jr. habang si Pangulong Joseph Estrada ay nagbigay ng 3 -month extension term kay General Joselin Nazareno.
